EPDM tape seals because it pushes back. It doesn't stick to anything on its own. It gets compressed between two surfaces, and when those surfaces try to move apart, the rubber pushes back. That's a different way to seal a joint.
If the joint is flat, if the gap is controlled, if the seal will be compressed during assembly - EPDM tape is the right choice. It doesn't need to stick. It needs to be squeezed. And when it's squeezed, it seals.

What EPDM Tape Actually Is
It comes in two forms:
Solid (dense) EPDM - harder, stronger, used where the seal needs to resist pressure
Closed-cell foam EPDM - softer, more compressible, used where the seal needs to fill small irregularities
Most EPDM tape is supplied with an acrylic adhesive backing. This adhesive doesn't do the sealing. It just holds the tape in place during installation. The rubber does the sealing through compression.
If you remove the adhesive backing, the EPDM rubber still seals. It just won't stay in place while you assemble the joint.
